Tips for Fishing in the Rain

These tips can make for a great day out in the rain if you read carefully, but if you don’t it could make for a miserable day out on the water.

1. Conditions

During the warmer months when the bite is on, fishing in the rain can be really fun! Make sure before you go out or continue to fish that there is no lightning present or in the forecast. It is best to be safe than sorry. When it rains bass like to move around because the surface is disturbed and predators no longer hunt for them. Cover as much water as you can when it rains since they are moving around a lot. Try using a topwater bait that disrupts the surface like a Whopper Plopper. Choose a bait that makes lots of noise so that the fish can hear and feel it over the rain and waves.

2. Stand Out

Rain usually means dark skies, a lot of disturbance on the surface, and the water muddying up. Use baits with lots of vibration and movement. You will want to try super contrasting colors like chartreuse or black. Try throwing spinnerbaits with a trailer to be bold and noisy. When using a spinnerbait make sure it’s either chartreuse or black. Burn the spinnerbait through the water to cover water quickly and to be loud. This should most definitely get the attention of bass.

3. Find Currents

Where you find current there will be fish. All currents will pick up when it rains so find where there is water flowing. Baitfish generally like to hang out in the current when it rains because the water is so fresh and oxygenated. Try looking for drains pouring out water, feeder creeks, and runoff areas.

If you follow these steps you may just have one of your best days out on the water. Leave everyone speechless when you tell them you caught all those bass in the rain.
